In the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), few names have resonated as powerfully as that of Amanda Nunes. An iconic figure in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Nunes has built a legacy that is unparalleled in its sheer dominance. The legendary fighter chose UFC 289 as her moment to retire, leaving behind a record that will be challenging for any upcoming fighter to match.
UFC 289: Nunes Retires on Top
Amanda Nunes of Brazil announced her retirement following her victory over Irene Aldana of Mexico after their bantamweight title fight during the UFC 289 event at Rogers Arena on June 10, 2023, in Vancouver, Canada. With a near-flawless performance in the main event, Nunes set the bantamweight record for most takedowns and won the fight by scores of 50-44 twice and 50-43.
Nunes put on a spectacular performance, outclassing Aldana in every aspect of the fight. Aldana managed to land a crisp counter right hand in the first round, but the rest of the match saw her battered, beaten, and pummeled by the superior fighter.
The Retirement Announcement
After the fight, Nunes announced her retirement in the traditional way of retiring in MMA. She laid both of her bantamweight and featherweight championship belts in the center of the Octagon, had her gloves cut, and placed them on the floor. A joyous post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier was followed by celebrations, during which Nunes bounced around the Octagon, taking pictures and pouring beer on herself and others.
Despite the crowd’s disappointment at Rogers Arena, Nunes firmly said, “Tonight is the perfect time to retire”. She cited that her mother had asked her when she would hang them up and that she couldn’t take any more.
Nunes’ Legacy
Amanda Nunes leaves behind an unmatched legacy in the world of MMA. She has defeated seven women who have held a UFC belt, including Valentina Shevchenko (twice), Cris “Cyborg” Justino, Julianna Peña, Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Germaine de Randamie, and Holly Holm. She not only held two belts but successfully defended both of them, setting a high standard that will be hard to beat.
Her accomplishments extend beyond gender barriers, and few male fighters have achieved as much as she did. She leaves as one of the greatest fighters, regardless of gender, and it may be a long time before anyone can match her level of dominance.
